Refractive Lens Exchange
Depending on your pre-operative tests and desired result, your surgeon may recommend a Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE).
RLE involves replacing your natural lens with a specialized lens that corrects refractive error.
The procedure may be done utilizing the latest femtosecond laser that is revolutionizing cataract surgery. The implant is called an intraocular lens, or IOL. There are several IOL options that remedy different types of vision problems. Your surgeon will help you decide which is right for you.

Astigmatism can be corrected using various surgical techniques (arcuate incisions) or by using a toric intraocular lens. A toric lens is designed to reduce or eliminate astigmatism and improve distance vision.
AcrySof Toric (Alcon) and STAAR Toric (STAAR) IOLs are two brands of toric IOLs available that treat astigmatism as part of an RLE.
A toric lens is designed to reduce or eliminate astigmatism and improve distance vision.
AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL is a unique toric design that offers astigmatism patients the opportunity for bilateral spectacle-independent distance vision. Aspheric technology reduces spherical and higher-order aberrations, which offers increased contrast sensitivity and improved functional vision.
The STAAR Toric IOL is a foldable lens that your surgeon implants in your eye to replace your natural lens. It is designed to correct astigmatism, and help you regain quality distance vision. STAAR Toric IOLs are the only toric lens made from silicone, a stable, non-toxic and flexible material the human eye comfortably tolerates.
Multifocal IOLs have multiple viewing areas much like bifocal glasses. These lenses are designed for patients to see multiple distances through different parts of the same lens. This technology is aimed at correcting near, far, and intermediate vision to allow more freedom from glasses.
AcrySof® ReSTOR IQ ReSTOR® (Alcon) and TECNIS® Multifocal (Abbot Medical Optics) are two brands of advanced, multifocal IOLs that use unique optics to provide for near, intermediate, and distance vision.
The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL is a multifocal lens designed to replace the natural lens and correct presbyopia for a full range of vision. This lens utilizes patented apodized diffractive technology to deliver optimal light energy to the retina. More than 900,000 of these lenses have been successfully implanted worldwide since 2005.
The advanced TECNIS® Multifocal is designed to give patients back their youthful vision. The TECNIS® Multifocal Lens provides patients with high-quality vision at any distance, and in any light condition — even in low light. Technis Multifocal delivers results superior to those of a standard multifocal lens and offers an excellent chance to become spectacle independent.
Presbyopia-correcting IOLs offer convenient functional advantages to the conventional standard monofocal IOLs.
Accomodating IOLs mimic the functioning of our natural young lens with a special design that allows the lens to move when your eye muscles flex (accommodation.)
This movement changes the effective power of the lens within the eye and allows patients to change their focus from far to near and in between. This lens allows your eye to “zoom focus” for near, intermediate and distance vision.
Crystalens (Bausch + Lomb) is the only FDA-approved accommodating intraocular lens available at this time. Unlike a standard IOL, Crystalens is an artificial lens implant that can correct for some presbyopia, the loss of near and intermediate vision.
Crystalens was modeled after the human eye, and, like the natural lens, uses the eye muscle to flex and accommodate in order to focus on objects in the environment at all distances.
This unique IOL is designed to allow you to enjoy a fuller, more natural range of vision for most activities, including reading, working on the computer, and driving a car.
Trulign (Bausch + Lomb) is the only accommodating IOL that is FDA-approved and treats astigmatism.
Presbyopia-correcting IOLs offer convenient functional advantages to the conventional standard monofocal IOLs by allowing patients to perform most daily activities with less dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
