Laser Cataract Patient Education

Advanced Cataract Surgery: Presbyopia Correction

At nJoy Vision, we realize that no two people (or their eyes) are alike.

For that reason, we’ve developed two distinct cataract surgery packages to help ensure our patients always receive a surgical plan tailored to their needs.

Our Advanced Cataract Surgery Package was created for those with presbyopia, a condition in which the lens of the eye loses its ability to focus up close. The Advanced plan was designed to give you minimal dependence on glasses for all distances, which may include the following technologies.

  • Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery
  • Diagnostic Corneal Mapping
  • Astigmatism Reduction with Limbal Relaxing Incision
  • Advanced Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implants
  • Peri-Operative Lens Power Verification
  • Post-Operative All Laser enhancement
  • Extended Post-Operative Care Period (6 months of Post Op Visits).

Multifocal IOLs

Today, cataract surgery has several lens implant options that minimize the need for glasses or contact lenses and give back the ability to have distance and near vision. There are several presbyopia-correction lens options available, and your surgeon will recommend the best options for you to meet your post-operative vision goals. Some of these lenses act like a bifocal lens, correcting distance and near with one lens. Others focus in and out giving better depth of focus. These types of IOLs are called Multifocal IOLs.

Multifocal IOLs have multiple viewing areas much like bifocal glasses. These lenses are designed for patients to see multiple distances through different parts of the same lens. This technology is aimed at correcting near, far, and intermediate vision to allow more freedom from glasses.

TECNIS® Multifocal (Abbot Medical Optics) and AcrySof® ReSTOR IQ ReSTOR® (Alcon) are two brands of advanced, multifocal IOLs that use unique optics to provide for near, intermediate, and distance vision. The advanced TECNIS® Multifocal is an implantable lens that restores vision after cataract surgery and corrects presbyopia (the need for reading glasses). Designed to give patients back their youthful vision, the TECNIS® Multifocal Lens provides patients with high-quality vision at any distance, and in any light condition — even in low light. Technis Multifocal delivers results superior to those of a standard multifocal lens and offers an excellent chance to become spectacle independent. The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL is a multifocal lens designed to replace cataractous crystalline lenses and correct presbyopia for a full range of vision. This lens utilizes patented apodized diffractive technology to deliver optimal light energy to the retina. More than 900,000 of these lenses have been successfully implanted worldwide since 2005.

Presbyopia-correcting IOLs offer convenient functional advantages to the conventional standard monofocal IOLs.

Accommodating IOLs

Accommodating IOLs mimic the functioning of our natural young lens with a special design that allows the lens to move when your eye muscles flex (accommodation.) This movement changes the effective power of the lens within the eye and allows patients to change their focus from far to near and in between. This lens allows your eye to “zoom focus” for near, intermediate and distance vision.
