Dr. Cherian realized she needed glasses as a middle schooler when she struggled to see the board in class. Over time, her nearsightedness was mostly corrected with glasses or contact lenses. However, as an optometrist, she knows better than anyone that even small changes in vision can make a big difference in how you experience the world. When she noticed her night vision worsening and struggled to read the lyrics at church, she decided it was time to explore LASIK.

What is your name and when did you have LASIK?
My name is Joann Cherian, and I had LASIK at nJoy Vision in August 2024.
What is your profession and what role does vision play in your job and/or day-to-day life?
I am an optometrist at the VA. Vision obviously plays an important role in my job, but it is also one of the most important senses because it can give us an insight into the whole body.

How long had you been considering LASIK and why did you decide to do it now?
I had been considering LASIK for about a year after I noticed my vision at night was getting worse, and I couldn’t read the lyrics on the screen at church as well. One day, I couldn’t follow along like I wanted to and decided it was time to move forward with LASIK.
Are you satisfied with the results of your LASIK procedure?
Yes, I can see so much more clearly now!

The whole process at nJoy Vision was so easy! I checked in and was greeted by the friendly front desk. The technician, Richard, did a very thorough pre-examination before Dr. Holsted performed my examination and confirmed I would be a good candidate for LASIK.
On the day of the procedure, I was taken to the pre-op waiting area and met Dr. Jones, who performed my surgery. He walked me through everything the procedure would entail and I was given an anti-anxiety medication to help me remain calm and relaxed during the procedure.
When it was my turn, they brought me into the laser suite, and the whole procedure took less than 5 minutes for a single eye. Immediately following the procedure, I was examined by the doctor behind a slit lamp and was allowed to head on my way with my driver.

Tell us about the first time you realized you had bad vision?
It was in middle school when I realized I couldn’t see the board at school very well.
How did your vision impact your life as a child, as a teenager, and as an adult?
My vision wasn’t very bad growing up as I had a slight nearsightedness. I mostly used a prescription in my sunglasses when I drove or went on hikes and walks. It was only as I got older that I began to yearn for the clearer vision full correction would give me.
What was your least favorite thing about wearing glasses and contact lenses?
My contacts would dry out and I couldn’t wear a vast majority of brands for more than a few hours.
What are you most looking forward to doing or experiencing without glasses or contacts?
I am looking forward to being able to see at distances without my glasses. I will be able to watch movies without the periphery of the screen having my glasses frames in view.
What is the biggest difference in your life now compared to before you had LASIK?
Everything is so much clearer. I only had one eye done because one eye wasn’t a candidate for the procedure with how low the prescription was. I now compare my old “good eye” to my new “good eye” and can see a difference in what I was missing out on!
