nJoy Vision LASIK Journey – Dr. Bri Prescott

nJoy Vision OKC LASIK Blog Dr. Bri Prescott Patient Journey Feature Image

Meet Dr. Bri Prescott, OD, an optometrist at Midwest City Eye Care Associates in Midwest City, Oklahoma, and a recent LASIK patient at nJoy Vision in OKC.

Dr. Prescott’s journey with vision began as a preschooler in Illinois when she got her first pair of glasses. Each year, she eagerly anticipated her annual eye appointment with her hometown eye doctor, who helped her see better each time. The desire to have the same impact on other people’s lives inspired her to become an optometrist.

After a lifetime of dealing with glasses and contact lenses, Dr. Prescott finally decided it was her turn for LASIK. With exacting standards for procedure outcomes and patient experience, she entrusted her eyesight to nJoy Vision.

As an nJoy Vision patient and a referring physician, Dr. Prescott is thrilled with her LASIK results. Less than two months after her procedure, she’s seeing 20/15! And with spring approaching, she’s looking forward to finally enjoying time outdoors with her husband and golden retriever, Stoops, free from the constraints of glasses and contacts.

What is your name, and when did you get LASIK?

My name is Bri Prescott, and I had LASIK at nJoy Vision on January 25, 2024.

What is your profession, and what role does vision play in your job and/or day-to-day life?

I’m an optometrist, so vision is my life! I spend all day helping others see the best they can and monitoring for diseases to preserve vision. I need good vision to be able to help others see their best.

I’m an optometrist, so vision is my life!

How long had you considered LASIK, and why did you decide to do it now?

I’ve wanted to get LASIK for more than ten years. After finishing school and settling into our first home, I finally reached a point of stability in my life. I have wanted LASIK for a long time, and at this point in time, I could afford to do it. That and my husband tried on a pair of my glasses for fun in November and said, “We need to prioritize this. Your vision is horrible!”

Are you satisfied with the results of your LASIK procedure?

YES! I love my new eyes!!

Take us through the LASIK process at nJoy Vision, including the consultation, procedure, and follow-up appointments.

I did my initial workup with dilation at my office, Midwest City Eye Care Associates, which was very convenient because it helped limit the time I needed to take off work.

I had my first pre-op consultation with nJoy Vision a few days before my surgery to get all the necessary measurements to determine the optimal treatment zone to correct my vision, and it was a breeze! Everyone was so kind and did an excellent job walking me through each step, explaining what they were measuring and why. I didn’t have to wait long to be brought back or to see the doctor. Dr. Roby took her time to answer all my questions and made me feel very comfortable with the process. I didn’t feel pressured or stressed in any way.

The day of the procedure was also a breeze! I was brought back to the pre-op area within 30 minutes of arriving and waited another 15 to 20 minutes for my turn to do the procedure. I went into the procedure suite with Dr. Jones, and bam!… five minutes later, I was done and walking down the hall to my husband with better vision!

The procedure was painless. There was just a bit of pressure and staring at some bright lights, and then it was smooth sailing from there. I was a little surprised at how foggy my vision was immediately following the procedure. Being an optometrist, I knew there would be some swelling of the cornea since it had just been operated on, but I didn’t realize how foggy things would be.

I went home, took a nap, and woke up around dinner time with 20/40 vision! The swelling healed a lot faster than I anticipated, too. By the next morning (16 hours post-op), I was seeing 20/15. No pain or irritation, just clear vision!

I did my follow-up appointments at my office again for convenience. I like that nJoy works so well with referring doctors because I’m sure there are a lot of people like me who would like to see their local ODs, who might only be 5-10 minutes from where they live and work, instead of having to drive back to nJoy.

By the next morning, I was seeing 20/15. No pain or irritation, just clear vision!

Tell us about the first time you realized you had bad vision.

I don’t remember a time when I had good vision! I started wearing glasses in preschool, so my whole life has been blurred vision. It’s the main reason I became an eye doctor. I always thought it was fun to see my hometown eye doctor every year because he helped me see a little better each time I went in, and I wanted to make that difference in someone else’s life.

Before LASIK, I was a -6.00 diopter myope. I literally couldn’t read the big E from across the room unless I was standing 5 feet from it. I’m still trying to adjust to life without glasses, which is a wonderful “problem” to have. It’s crazy to me to be able to wake up in the middle of the night and see out the window or finish reading my book before bed, just sitting it on the bedside table and going straight to sleep.

My whole life has been blurred vision. It’s the main reason I became an eye doctor.

How did your vision impact your life as a child, as a teenager, and as an adult?

As a child, I was always worried I’d be bullied and called four-eyes (thanks, Arthur!). Fortunately, I never was. However, I always struggled with athletics, and I hated being outdoors and doing any physical activities because my glasses would slide down my nose so I couldn’t see.

When I became a teenager, I got contact lenses, and that was a huge improvement. I became much more active and even worked as a lifeguard throughout high school & college. Being a lifeguard and wearing contact lenses posed its own problem, though. If a lens popped out while I was swimming, I couldn’t see anything and would have to call my mom to bring up more lenses while at work because I couldn’t even drive home safely to get new ones if I needed to, which was very embarrassing.

As an adult, my vision impacted me in different ways. Waking up to a bump in the middle of the night always had my heart racing because I couldn’t see anything. I’d have to fumble around for my glasses or wake up my husband to see what was happening. It’s also impractical to stumble around in the dark, trying to get to the kitchen to find a drink of water. My eyes would also get really dry with my contact lenses. The older I got, the dryer they became, and I had to use artificial tears all the time.

What was your least favorite thing about wearing glasses and contact lenses?

I had several “least favorite things.” Dry eyes from contact lenses, weird color fringes, lack of peripheral vision, and glasses slipping down my nose come to mind.

What are you most looking forward to doing or experiencing without glasses or contacts?

Waking up and being able to see! I’m looking forward to going on vacation and not ruining the trip because I lost a contact lens. I’m also ready to go swimming without worrying about losing a lens.

What is the biggest difference in your life now compared to before you had LASIK?

I wasn’t expecting my nighttime driving to get so much better! Being an eye doctor, I know most people have astigmatism and assumed it was normal to see streaks around headlights. After LASIK, I don’t see any streaks! There are some halos (mostly from my eyes being a little dry), but lights are a round circle, not a diamond!
