Eyes on the Pies: National Pizza Day

Every once in a while, we like to blog about topics other than vision.

Today is one of those instances. It’s National Pizza Day. We couldn’t let this day pass without paying our respects to the almighty pie. So, in order to justify taking up nJoy Vision blog space to celebrate pizza, we are going to give you all of the info you need to make a pizza that will promote good vision! So roll up your sleeves and grab something to write with. We are going to give you a step-by-step tutorial on how to build the perfect pizza for your pupils!

Step 1: The Crust

A diet containing foods with a low glycemic index (GI) can help reduce your risk for age-related macular degeneration. Swapping refined carbs for whole wheat options helps promote overall eye health. Here is a great whole wheat pizza crust recipe!

Step 2: The Sauce

Good news. It turns out that colorful fruits and veggies (such as tomatoes and bell peppers) are great for your eyes. Carotenoids — the compounds that give these fruits and vegetables their yellow, orange and red pigments — are thought to help decrease the risk of many eye diseases. Here is an amazing tomato and bell pepper sauce recipe!

 Step 3: The Toppings

In moderation, lean beef in your diet can boost your eye health. Beef contains zinc, which helps your body absorb vitamin A and may play a role in reducing risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration. So bring on the beef! Top off your pie with some ground beef and throw in some fresh spinach, full of lutein and zeaxanthin that can help stem the development of macular degeneration and cataracts. Bring back some of the bell peppers you cut up for your sauce, and you are on your way to a pretty incredible pizza!
